Hello to all,
For the 2023 season, I made 279 trips between the beginning of June and the end of September. I never thought I'd surpass my 2013 record of 185 cruises. It wasn't a goal, but I didn't want to miss anything at sea. I didn't see much of the blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus), rarely fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus), many minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata), humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae), grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) or harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena). Sometimes the beluga (Delphinapterus leucas) and once the white-sided dolphin (Lagenorhynchus acutus). June was a difficult month, with few marine mammals, then gradually got better and better, ending up with lots of cetaceans in September. Inevitably, the humpback whale was the most closely observed species, and therefore the animal that gave me the most memorable experiences: jumping, slapping the caudal or pectoral fins, curiosity around the boat, mother and calf, swimming in a group or alone, surface feeding, etc...Encountering a group of a dozen whales was a September highlight. Last but not least, watching a hundred white-sided dolphins was awesome. I also rescued two paddle boarders lost in the fog off the coast!
My track record in terms of the number of outings with Essipit since 2008, with a break between 2017 and 2021:
Season 2023: 279 cruises
Season 2022: 104 cruises
Season 2016 : ? cruises
Season 2015: 180 cruises
2014 season: 174 cruises
Season 2013: 185 cruises
Season 2012: 174 cruises
2011 season: 169 cruises
Season 2010 : 129 cruises
Season 2008 : ? cruises (June only)
I would have liked to compare with the 2008 season because I stayed there for about a month like in 2022. Indeed, I was leaving for the French Polynesia in July 2008 and the logbook is no longer accessible.
I'm ending 2023 with my tenth season!
