Hello to all,
This 2025 season was different from last year in terms of sightings of different species of large whales. When we talk about large whales, we're not talking about belugas or minke whales, but other cetaceans such as blue, humpback and fin whales.
There were more blue whales than other species, such as humpbacks or fin whales. This is due to the presence of krill (small shrimp) and fewer fish. The blue whale eats only krill, and several tons a day. Around twenty different blue whales were counted this year, some of which have been well known in the marine park for years. We're thinking of the female - Jaw-Breaker- part of the 15 to 18 % St. Lawrence blue whales that show their tail when they dive.
As for my beautiful observations at sea, there are several that stand out:
- there's the memory of a humpback whale that made about 15 jumps on my arrival at the site (out of 30 in total), of a humpback whale on August 26, 2025, that slapped its pectorals and caudal fin. It was my best cruise of the season for this behavior, the meaning of which we don't know.
- I was able to meet people from the Innu community of Pessamit on my boat, and was invited to a ceremony in the evening.
- I was able to complete the Grand Slam several times on July 26, 2025 and October 1, 2025, i.e. observe all the whales on a single outing: blue, humpback, minke, beluga and fin whales.
- I've met famous fin whales like Ti- Croche, whose mother was known until her death in 2013.
- My encounter with the beaked whale on the morning of August 02 will live forever in my memory, as it's a rare species that never comes to the river. This adds yet another marine mammal to my collection of species observed since the beginning.
- the surprise visit of a blue whale alongside the boat and the jumping of a humpback whale on the same cruise (September 29, 2025).
- several surface-feeding blue whales in calm seas far from the marina. Almost 45 minutes one way, and the same for the return trip.
- visit of a minke whale on August 18, 2025 around the boat, blowing bubbles at the surface and curious (see the video on my page youtube)
- I'm very happy to be able to welcome great customers and visits from family and friends on my boat.
- On my penultimate outing, I managed to reach 301 outings, make the Grand Slam and see dolphins! Incredible.
I would like to thank all customers for providing me with photos and videos free of charge, as it is difficult to do so while flying. I ask anyone reading this article not to copy or sell them without my permission. Thank you very much.
My logbook for the 2025 season is in progress. This one is from last year:
