A unique place located in a marine park created in 1998 and which responds to an ever-increasing tourist demand for whale watching.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element tide:<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-19c354e0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"19c354e0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The St. Lawrence River is one thousand six hundred kilometers long and starts in the great American lakes and flows into the Atlantic:<\/p><p>There are three strata of water in the river:<\/p><ul><li>the surface layer<\/li><li>the cold middle layer<\/li><li>the deep layer<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-a68196c elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"a68196c\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The salty water of the North Atlantic rises through the Laurentian Current at depth, and the fresh surface water sinks back into the Gulf and the ocean. These two layers will oppose each other. \u00a0<\/p><p>The tides created by the attraction of the moon and the sun on the ocean, play a determining role in the contribution of salty and cold sea water rich in nutrients. The narrower the place, the higher and more important the incoming tidal wave will be. It can vary from three to eight meters.<\/p><p>At Tadoussac, the Saguenay Fjord brings its freshness to the St. Lawrence Estuary. All these factors, along with the wind, play an essential role in the feeding of the whales.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-dafd1da elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"dafd1da\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-9ba1786\" data-id=\"9ba1786\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c3fb88f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c3fb88f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Plankton:<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ab37f10 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ab37f10\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In order to understand whale feeding, we need to know what interests them.<\/p><p>Plankton, the base of any marine food chain, is fundamental to the trophic chain.<\/p><p>It is composed of many planktonic organisms including phytoplankton and zooplankton. Their life span is about two years.<\/p><p>The first is made up of planktonic algae which will serve as food for the herbivorous and carnivorous zooplankton. This one needs solar energy for photosynthesis and nitrogen found in ammonium and nitrate.<\/p><p>The krill or euphausides, is a zooplankton which like all the others does not like the light. During the day, it will stay at depth to hide from predators and at night it will come to the surface to feed on phytoplankton. When they reach adulthood, they move vertically and avoid being too deep or too close to the surface. The larvae, as for them, will let themselves be carried along by the current.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-inner-section elementor-element elementor-element-53f0608 elementor-section-content-middle elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"53f0608\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-no\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-5129164\" data-id=\"5129164\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c1b7e0f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c1b7e0f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Baleen whales feed mainly on krill. A blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus), which can reach up to thirty meters long and weigh one hundred tons, fills up on food before winter and eats three to four tons of krill per day.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-492b2c6\" data-id=\"492b2c6\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-664c7a0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"664c7a0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"243\" height=\"164\" src=\"https:\/\/julienmarchal.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/canada6.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-3973\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-a2efa12 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"a2efa12\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-d63a7c4\" data-id=\"d63a7c4\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ca6e303 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ca6e303\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The embankment and plankton trap:<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-14c361b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"14c361b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The Laurentian Channel is three hundred to five hundred meters deep. At the end of the channel, there is a large concentration of plankton that runs up against slopes and towards the surface. A mass that can reach several kilometers long and a hundred meters thick.<\/p><p>The slope has a steep topography, near \u00cele Rouge and the Saguenay Fjord, opposite Tadoussac.<\/p><p>In this abundance of euphausids, females will lay eggs and adults will reach the end of their journey. There is then an incessant back and forth between the surface layer which pushes the krill larvae towards the Gulf and the intermediate layer which makes them return.<\/p><p>Organic debris will continuously settle on the bottom, but the deep currents will bring them up (upwelling), accompanied by the high tide, and mix with the fresh water. This is the brackish color that we find rich in nutrients.<\/p><p>It is a necessary food supply for the krill, but trapped in front of a dead end, it will be pushed towards the surface.<\/p><p>In addition, it will occur as a pump effect boosting the mixture towards the Gulf.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-b6da1d5 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"b6da1d5\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-8d2dda8\" data-id=\"8d2dda8\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-46e3439 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"46e3439\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The Whale Feast:<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-04bc59c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"04bc59c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The whales choose to come to Tadoussac because of this concentration of food.<\/p><p>Some feed on capelin, sand eels or herring and copepods, depending on the tides and cold waters. All these pelagic fishes will eat in the same place.<\/p><p>The whales are often found at the head of the Laurentian Channel, along a water depth of one hundred meters.<\/p><p>The whales of excursions know the place where you can find up to fifty boats in the same area!<\/p><p>They fatten in a plankton cul-de-sac, bringing a targeted density, without being obliged to make efforts and to spend too much energy. We observed that they stay longer at the surface at night to filter the krill coming up from the deep.
