It was founded in 1991. Since the beginning, it takes care of the well-being of the observed animals. It participates in numerous studies on dolphins, whales and sea turtles.<\/p><p>Many specialists, photographers and professionals trust him.<\/p><p>The encounter with the giants of the sea is not without danger. Even if it is proven that whales are aware of the presence of boats at their side and that they are careful. Espa\u00e7o Talassa is all about safety. Through a library, a film, exhibitions ... you will discover how the Azorean hunters went to sea. This hunt has always been traditional, even in recent years, far from the massacres that have taken place in other countries. Each room has either a sea view or a view of the largest mountain in Portugal: Mount Pico, and has an individual bathroom. Breakfast is taken at the Lodge.<\/li><li>Stroll in the village of Pico: it is the occasion to walk along the sea, to admire the particular structure of the Azorean houses... Free visit.<\/li><li>Briefing at Espa\u00e7o Talassa (around 7pm): first base for the observation and study of cetaceans in the Azores, created in 1991. It offers whale watching trips and participates in research on whales, dolphins and sea turtles. Meeting with its founder Serge Viallelle. During this first briefing, he will talk about whale hunting and the rise of ecotourism related to these marine mammals.<\/li><li>Evening meals: they are taken in restaurants offering traditional Azorean meals.<\/li><\/ul><h3>Day 2 (July 4th)<\/h3><ul><li>Whale watching day with Espa\u00e7o Talassa on inflatable motorboats: the most suitable boat for this activity and the Azorean sea.<\/li><\/ul><p>From the land the lookout observes the sea and informs the groups (12 people per boat, including two people from Espa\u00e7o Talassa) about the cetaceans to be observed.<\/p><p>Depending on the sea state, this day is composed of two trips of about 3<\/p><p>hours, return to the port for lunch.<\/p><ul><li>If the sea is bad and we can't go out, half a day can be dedicated to the visit of the Malcolm Clarke's museum in Sao Joao: scientist studying cephalopods (particular mollusks like squids, cuttlefishes...) and those who eat them: sperm whales.<\/li><li>Evening meal in Lajes.<\/li><li>Night at the Lodge.<\/li><\/ul><h3>Day 3 (July 5th)<\/h3><ul><li>Visit to the whaling museum in Lajes<\/li><li>Hike along the coast and near the lookout of Queimada where you may have the chance to see cetaceans from the coast.
